Unable to run DBCA – java error(NETCA is OK)

Hi.

Just a quick post for those who may face the same strange situation.

At the customer site I tried to run dbca tool to configure ASM, but received:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException

Site dba claimed that yesterday everything was working perfectly… 😉

After little investigation the reason of the problem was found and it was a little surprise, just look on part of LISTENER.ORA:

LISTENER =
     (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
         (DESCRIPTION =
             (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(PORT = 1521))
         )
     )

Is there something unusual ?

No HOST attribute of ADDRESS parameter.

After correcting this issue I was able to start dbca.

But who edited LISTENER.ORA ?

PS.

similar issue is already documented at MyOS:

353629.1 DBCA Errors On Startup with NetworkUtils.getOneLocalListenerProtocolAddress
