Different RMAN Retention Policies for DISK and TAPE

Short note for myself on how to implement different RMAN Retention policies for DISK and TAPE backups in the same configuration.

The goal is to have:

  • Retention for DISK backups as 7 Days;
  • Retention for TAPE backups as 60 Days;

Implementation:

  • set policy for TAPE as RMAN CONFIGURATION
    • CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 60 DAYS;
  • for deletion of OBSOLETE backups use next commands as a single block:
    • DELETE OBSOLETE DEVICE TYPE  TAPE;
    • DELETE OBSOLETE RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS DEVICE TYPE DISK ;

RMAN DUPLICATE FROM… Active Standby

Recently I have published post about issue with RMAN duplication of Oracle database when standby database was used as a target. Later in updates of mentioned post I have confirmed that with fix for BUG:11715084 everything works as expected.

Today I have decided to make post with step-by-step procedure with which I have tested mentioned feature – making standby database from standby database.
I will Simplify setup As Much As Possible(SAMAP):

  1. single machine will be used as a host for all 3 databases
  2. OMF(Oracle Managed Files) will be used for managing files location and file names
  3. FRA(Fast/Flash Recovery Area) will be used for archive logs

RMAN DUPLICATE FROM Active Database From Standby ends with ORA-01671

Hi.

Quite interesting question was asked by one of our customers:

“Is it possible/supported to do RMAN DUPLICATE FOR STANDBY FROM ACTIVE DATABASE when TARGET is STANDBY ?”

It’s really seasonable question, especially when You already have standby database and wanna refresh a development environment using standby as a source/target to not stress primary database .

There are no such restriction in 11.2 “Prerequisites Specific to Active Database Duplication”, so why not ? 😉

But even Oracle wanted to provide mentioned functionality it’s not often used(tested), so let’s see what we get as a result Continue reading
